The Digital X-ray of the Sacrum and Coccyx is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize and assess the condition of these bones in the pelvis. The sacrum is a triangular bone formed by the fusion of five sacral vertebrae, and the coccyx is a small, movable bone located below the sacrum.
Indications: The X-ray may be ordered in the following cases:
- Pelvic Injuries: To identify fractures or dislocations resulting from falls or accidents.
- Chronic Pain: To investigate persistent pain in the sacral or coccygeal area, potentially caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis or spondylolisthesis.
- Congenital Anomalies: To diagnose congenital defects or malformations of the sacrum and coccyx.
- Post-Surgical Monitoring: To evaluate the results of surgeries or treatments in the pelvic area.
- Inflammatory Processes: To diagnose inflammatory conditions like sacroiliitis (inflammation of the sacroiliac joint).
Preparation:
- Remove Metal Objects: Such as jewelry or belt buckles to avoid artifacts on the images.
- Inform About Pregnancy: Women should notify the technician if they are pregnant to take necessary precautions.
- Disclose Previous Injuries or Surgeries: Inform the technician about any past trauma or surgery in the area for accurate result interpretation.
Procedure:
During the examination, two X-ray images are taken: one in the anteroposterior view and one in the lateral view. The anteroposterior view helps assess bone structure, integrity, and detect abnormalities such as fractures, bone growths, or osteoporosis. The lateral view visualizes the profile of the sacrum and coccyx, aiding in the detection of developmental anomalies, dislocations, or other disorders.
- Positioning: The patient is positioned on the X-ray table, typically lying on their back or stomach.
- Imaging: The radiologist will adjust the X-ray machine to capture the necessary projections.
- Breath Hold: The patient may be asked to hold their breath briefly during the X-ray exposure.
- Duration: The procedure takes a few minutes, and normal activities can be resumed immediately after.
