The Digital X-ray of the Knee Joint is a common diagnostic procedure used to visualize the structures of the knee joint and identify various pathological conditions. During the procedure, X-rays pass through the joint tissues, creating an image of the bones, cartilage, and other structures on either X-ray film or a digital detector.

Procedure: To obtain a comprehensive view of the knee joint, two projections are usually performed: anteroposterior (front-to-back) and lateral (side). The patient is positioned on the X-ray table, and the knee joint is placed in the appropriate position for each projection. The process is quick and painless, requiring no special preparation.

Digital X-ray allows for high-quality images to be obtained rapidly, which can be easily processed and transmitted electronically.

Role: Digital X-ray of the knee joint is a non-invasive and informative diagnostic method that provides valuable information about the condition of the joint and its structures. This procedure helps in identifying various pathological conditions such as osteoarthritis, fractures, bone tumors, inflammatory joint diseases, and other disorders.

Indications: This X-ray may be prescribed in the following cases:

  • Knee Injuries: After injuries such as falls or contusions, X-rays help identify potential bone fractures or joint surface damage.
  • Chronic Knee Pain: For persistent or intermittent knee pain, which may be caused by osteoarthritis, inflammatory joint diseases, or other pathologies.
  • Reduced Joint Mobility: To determine the cause of limited knee movement or range of motion.
  • Surgical Planning: Before planned knee surgery, such as joint replacement or ligament reconstruction, X-rays are necessary to assess the condition of the bones and joints.
  • Disease Monitoring: For chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or gout, regular X-rays may be needed to monitor disease progression and treatment effectiveness.

Preparation: No special preparation is required for the X-ray of the knee joint, but it is recommended to:

  • Remove jewelry and metal objects from the area to be imaged, as they can create artifacts on the X-ray.
  • Inform the medical staff if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy to take additional precautions.
  • Notify the doctor of any allergies to contrast agents, if applicable.
  • There is no need to fast or refrain from eating or drinking before the procedure.
