In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a treatment option for infertility when other methods have failed, are not applicable, or when the couple chooses IVF as their first treatment option. The success rates for conventional IVF are the highest, ranging from 35-50% depending on age.
A Classic IVF involves hormonal stimulation with gonadotropins. The goal of ovarian stimulation is to develop multiple eggs at the same time (naturally, a woman’s body releases just one egg per month). The duration of hormonal treatment varies from patient to patient, averaging 8-12 days. The treatment requires ultrasound monitoring and blood tests to adjust doses if necessary and to plan the egg retrieval.
Additionally, adjunct medications are required: GnRH agonists or antagonists (to prevent premature ovulation) and chorionic gonadotropin (to induce ovulation).
